Interference by Chet Malinow
Artist Statement
Moiré patterns happen when two sets of lines overlap and create something completely new–something that shimmers, shifts, or even looks like it’s moving. I’ve always loved that moment when repetitive geometry suddenly becomes unpredictable. Interference highlights a damaged signal, where an image is altered by a noise or electronic signal, preventing a clean picture on a television.
This series, Interference, grew out of my ongoing curiosity with these patterns. I start each piece by designing a pattern and sending it to a vinyl plotter that I’ve modified to work with canvas and ink. The machine draws every line slowly, one at a time.
When a layer finishes, I roll the canvas back to the beginning, change the pen, and print the next pattern over the top. Even when everything seems perfectly dialed in, something always shifts. The angle drifts, the starting point nudges over, and the machine brings its own quirks to the process. As much as I try to visualize the outcome of these patterns, the final image is always unpredictable and unique.
Interference is really about that back-and-forth between control and chance–the digital plan meeting the physical world, a glimpse into my obsession with Moiré.
