Automotive Paint Series

These were made over a few months earlier this year and to date, one of the most technical series I have made. First an automotive sprayer painted the 10 aluminum panels for me. Half of them are a rainbow sparkle over black, and the other, a chameleon paint that changes from green to purple depending on the angle of the light source. Bob, the sprayer, did a great job on these panels. Each piece has 12 layers of auto body paint. Once I received the panels from Bob, my brother and I welded subframes for each one. Epoxied the frames to the back of the panels and installed wires for hanging. I covered the auto paint in frisket tape, drew the design, and free hand xacto’d each line. I then spray painted the stencil and removed the tape. I was inspired by low rider paint jobs and the intricate candy paints and pin striping that wrap the beautiful cars. The process was long and intensive, but was awesome to collaborate with a sprayer and my brother to produce some of my favorite paintings.
